Taylor Swift made history at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night, becoming the most-awarded artist in the ceremony’s history with a career total of 33 wins. The pop superstar entered the night tied with BeyoncĂ© at 30 wins and pulled ahead by accepting the inaugural Artist Director Honors at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
The new award recognizes artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced the art of visual storytelling. Swift was presented the honor by Dakota Johnson before premiering her new music video for Patient Zero.
Artist Director Honors
In her acceptance speech, Swift reflected on two decades of work in music videos. ‘I got to start making music videos and being a part of music videos 20 years ago,’ she said. She estimated she has been involved in making roughly 60 music videos, 18 of which she wrote and directed.
Swift credited her fans for making the directing process rewarding. ‘The main reason why I love writing and directing music videos so much is because you, the fans, make it so much fun,’ she said. ‘You make it so rewarding because you actually care about what we’re making.’
She also thanked everyone who has worked on her videos. ‘I learned something from every single person that ever worked alongside me on these projects,’ Swift added.
Patient Zero Video Premiere
Swift then debuted the music video for Patient Zero, which she directed. The video stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell, with cinematography by Oscar-winning Emmanuel Lubezki. Cara Delevingne also makes a surprise appearance.
The video depicts Johnson as the latest woman involved with a seemingly perfect man played by Farrell. Swift’s character is revealed to be the man’s deceased ex, who returns as a ghost to warn Johnson that he is dangerous. The music video ends with Johnson looking at a grave belonging to Swift’s character.
In a social media statement, Swift wrote: ‘Getting to work with Emmanuel Lubezki was something out of a dream sequence, and I learned so much from getting to watch his genius in action. I want to thank Dakota and Colin for trusting me with their time, taste, and talent. Colin’s turn as a villain is even more impressive when you get to be around him. He’s an absolute light and as kind as they come.’
The song Patient Zero is part of The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, an expanded edition of Swift’s album released on Friday, which also includes the tracks Cleveland!, Pink Clouding, and Babylon.
Video of the Year
Later in the night, Swift won Video of the Year for The Fate of Ophelia. It was her sixth win in the category. In her speech, she praised the video’s one continuous shot approach. ‘I just loved making this video because I wanted it to seem like one continuous shot, so I learned a lot about hiding cuts in places,’ Swift said.
She thanked choreographer Mandy Moore, production designer Ethan Tobman, editor Chancler Haynes, and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto. ‘He’s one of the people who gave me the confidence to actually direct videos on my own,’ Swift said of Prieto.
Swift also won Best Direction for Opalite. Her three wins brought her career total to 33, moving her ahead of Beyoncé.
Dolly Parton Tribute
Swift dedicated her Video of the Year win to the late Dolly Parton, whom she called ‘the ultimate showgirl.’ Parton died on August 25 at age 80 following a brief battle with cancer.
‘I want to thank and dedicate this award to one person, without whom this wouldn’t be happening, and that person is the ultimate showgirl, Dolly Parton,’ Swift said. ‘Every single song that she wrote, her storytelling was so vivid and so rich. Listening to her songs, it’s like watching the best music video you have ever seen in your life, every single time.’
Swift continued: ‘She handled this thing with such grace and joy, and love, and gratitude for the fact that she got to do this. Everything that happened in her life or her career, she channeled back into love and gratitude and appreciation for her fans. I am lucky I got to be one of them, and I will always be one of them.’
‘I think we were all very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton for a time,’ Swift added. ‘Thank you for this amazing moment.’
Parton was also honored during the ceremony with a musical tribute from Kacey Musgraves, who performed I Will Always Love You.
Other Winners
Madonna led the night with seven total wins from 13 nominations, including Artist of the Year, Best Dance, and Best Collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter for Bring Your Love. ‘Most of you were probably not born, but I performed at the first MTV awards 43 years ago,’ Madonna said while accepting Artist of the Year.
BTS won Song of the Year and Best Group for Swim. Sienna Spiro was named Best New Artist. The ceremony was hosted by Snoop Dogg and aired live on CBS from the Peacock Theater.
